Our Post Offices in Croyde and Braunton, like most Post Offices this time of year, are working flat out. ‘Post in time for Christmas’. So people do. To many, this is the only time of year they actually post anything. We usually have to stand in line for ages to post our orders out every day, around mid December. When we finally get to the counter, the lady behind the counter always apologises for the wait. This year she also has to explain that our Special Delivery items may not be so “specially delivered” and that delivery cannot be guaranteed by the next day.
There is a strike of postal workers collecting and delivering mail. Not her, she’s not on strike, but the folk who actually collect, sort and deliver the post. Subsequently, all around her are piles and piles of boxes, packages and cartons of uncollected mail, waiting to be picked up. She smiles and apologises again.
