Back from the Isle of Gem Stones.

Back from the Isle of Gem Stones.

We try and get away each Winter. This year we decided to visit the beautiful island of Sri Lanka.

Its gem industry has a very long and colorful history. Sri Lanka was affectionately known as  Serendib, or Ratna-Dweepa, which means Gem Island. The name is a reflection of its natural wealth. The island probably had the best sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and other gems in the world. Records from sailors that visited the island centuries ago, state that they brought back “jewels of Serendib"

The fact that the island is blessed with so many gemstones, means that there are an abundance of jewellers. A visit to a jewellers in Sri Lanka was a must, to watch their artwork in motion. It was an inspiration and, although we do not use natural gems in our jewellery, we were able to get some new ideas for this season.
